Pet Corner Christmas Fairytale 2014

Henrietta Rat’s Cinderella
By: Isabella Ritona

Once Upon a Time….
There was a teenage rat named Henrietta. She wished she could be a human, but she knew it was impossible. Sad and dismayed, Henrietta wept and moaned until she was sure her mousescara had run (in the rats world, mascara was called mousescara and she wished she could have real mascara instead.) Henrietta sat upon her leaf bed reading her favorite called “Mouserella”. The story is about a maid mouse who falls in love with a dashing prince. (Mouserella is a rodent version of the human Cinderella) Henrietta also wished she could have a fairy-god mother like Mouserella. Then out of the random, a rat with wings too big for her body flew into the room. "Where had she come from?" Henrietta wondered with astonishment. "Are you my fairy-godmother?" Henrietta asked. '’Yes dear I am, and I can grant you one wish honey". "Gee thanks, now you come." Henrietta says rudely. (she was nothing like Mouserella if you haven't noticed.)"Well anyway, I want to be human." Henrietta announced proudly. And with a zap of the fairy-god mother's twig Henrietta turned human and nearly squished the fairy-god mother. Boy did Henrietta have fun. First she dined in a restaurant which apparently was above her hidey hole. She ordered salmon which smelled and tasted like the garbage her rat family ate out of the trash can, just the way she liked it. After that Henrietta went to the park and ran around. People stared a lot, but she didn't seem to care. Afterward she went to the beauty shop for mascara. She accidentally asked for mousescara instead of mascara and the sales clerk squinted her eyes and showed Henrietta mascara instead. Sadly at 12:00pm the fun ended and Henrietta turned into a rat again. When Henrietta got home she snuggled under her leaf blanket and realized something. Being a rat isn’t so bad. (She only thought this because she finally had mascara instead of mousescara which she hated)

And She Dreamed Happily Ever After………….

(Nothing like Mouserella’s happily ever after though)

Pet Corner Thanksgiving foods NOT to feed to your dog

LIST OF COMMON THANKSGIVING FOODS PETS NEED TO AVOID:
  • Turkey- raw or undercooked turkey may contain Salmonella bacteria, and fat trimmings or very fatty foods can trigger pancreatitis in dogs and cats. Even just a scrap of food may be enough to cause an upset stomach.
  • Bones – bones can become lodged in the throat, stomach, or intestinal tract or break into splinters, causing extensive damage to the stomach and gastro-intestinal tract if swallowed, even puncturing the small intestines.
  • Dough and Cake Batter – The combination of raw bread dough and the pet’s body heat can cause the dough to rise inside the stomach, resulting in vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating. The batter used in cakes and pies usually contains raw eggs which could contain salmonella bacteria that may lead to food poisoning.
  • Onion and Garlic – These ingredients contain sulfides, which are toxic to animals and can cause the destruction of red blood cells, especially in cats, causing Heinz body anemia.
  • Sage – This, as well as many other herbs, contain essential oils and resins that can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets, especially in cats.
  • Raisins and Grapes – They are a choking hazard to pets and ingestion of either can cause significant kidney damage.
  • Walnuts and Macadamia Nuts – These can cause weakness, depression, incoordination, and tremors.
  • Chocolate – Chocolate can be toxic for pets, or even fatal, due to a substance called theobromine found in chocolate.
Mushrooms – These can produce damage to a number of internal organs, including kidneys, liver, and the central nervous system. If a dog eats mushrooms, seizures, coma, vomiting, and even death can occur.
  • Chewing Gum and Candy – Many contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can cause a severe drop in blood glucose in dogs.
The dog in the picture below is doing a bad thing! Remember dogs could get very ill from turkey!
Don't let let your dog eat these other things too......  Bones, Dough, Cake Batter, Onion, Garlic, Herbs, Raisins, Grapes,  Walnuts, Macadamia nuts, Chocolate, Mushrooms, Chewing gum, and Hard candies! Keep your pooch safe this Thanksgiving!!
